Sixteen

“Stormy?”

I floated in and out, the world blurring at the edges before sharpening and then clouding again. Debbie hovered over me, her face pale and her eyes wide with fear. She tried to rouse me, but then she disappeared again.

It wasn’t until I heard Hunter’s voice that I finally had something to anchor myself to.

“Stormy?” Hunter was on his knees when I managed to focus on him. His hand shook as he stroked my hair. “Baby, what hurts? The ambulance is coming. Tell me what hurts.”

Nothing hurt. I was too numb. “I’m okay.” I was fairly certain I slurred the words.

When the paramedics arrived, he started barking orders. He wanted them to be careful. He wanted me taken to the hospital right away. He insisted he was going with me.

Then things blurred again. I wasn’t certain if I passed out. I only knew things went gray at the edges. When I woke again, the first thing I noted was the sterile whiteness of the ceiling. The sound of beeping machinery told me the rest. I was in a hospital bed.

Panic licked at my heart, and I tried to scramble to a sitting position. From his spot next to the bed, Hunter jerked up his head and leaned forward to still me.

“You’re okay,” he said. His eyes were red and puffy, but he projected an air of calm he likely hoped would soothe me. “It’s okay, baby.”

I stopped struggling to get out of bed and focused on him. “What happened?”

He sat on the edge of the bed, using his free hand to stroke my hair from my face. “I was just about to ask you that.”

“I don’t … um…” I chewed my bottom lip.

“Take your time.” He carefully slid his arm around my back and kissed my forehead. I appreciated his warmth as he rubbed my back. I didn’t appreciate the way his body started shaking. “I need you not to do that again,” he said when he could speak. The tears were thick in his voice. “Just … don’t.”

“I’m not sure what I did,” I admitted. “It’s really … weird … in, in my head.”

“Take your time. Tell me what you do remember. We can work on it together.”

“I wanted ice cream.”

His lips curved against my forehead. “I remember. Did you get it? If not, I can get you something here.”

“I got a hot fudge sundae. I remember eating it.”

“Okay. Keep going.”

“We were talking. I don’t think it was about anything important. We were just doing what we normally do.”

Hunter nodded.

“We were talking about the Otherkin. I was trying to explain … and then I heard something upstairs.”

Hunter stiffened slightly but didn’t interrupt me.

“I went up to check it out. It was the girl … and another boy, I think. They already have another one. How did they manage that?”

“I don’t know.”

“I was focused on the girl. She appeared in Sebastian’s bedroom doorway. I was focused on her … and then the lamp started moving.”

Very slowly, very deliberately, Hunter pulled back to study my face.
